History of Bandar Abbas Municipality

It is nearly one hundred years since Haj Moslem Booshehri was appointed as the first mayor of Bandar Abbas and the city has altered from a pre-industrial one to a city with justifiable urban system.

According to the author of the book (Alam-ol-Nas Fi Ahval-e Bandar Abbas) written by late Sadid-ol-Saltaneh Kababi, Bandar Abbas was located between Nayband and Sooru. The more expanded the city is, the bigger its urban problems get. Bandar Abbas ,located approximately at the 3 degrees from the Northern Tropic, has a hot and humid climate. The city has hot long summers and short moderate winters.

Not later than the 4th century AH, there used to be a port and a small village in the suburbs of Bandar Abbas called Suroo.      They named the land Comorao or Camarand due to the presence of lobsters and crabs on its beaches. The current name – Gamebroon- is most probably derived from Gama which is  Portuguese originally.

In 1622 CE Shah Abbas could defeat Portuguese troops with the help of British troops. In honor of this victory Gumbroon was renamed Bandar Abbas. In the current division, Bandar Abbas is the capital city of Hormozgan and one of the most important centers of business and trade in the vicinity of the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea.

Rapid growth of Bandar Abbas in the past 50 years turned the city into the biggest and the most crowded coastal city in the south and numerous events boosted the city accordingly.

At the present time Bandar Abbas is 5323 hectares wide. The land which is limited to the solid heights  from the north and the beach from the south, is 5.5 kilometers to 700 meters deep. Although the length along the beach extends to more than 16 kilometers, this length stretches more if it lacks the functional limitations, since the beach has been the main aspect in establishing the city.

Of this land which has accommodated a population of about 352570 until 1382, only 3137 hectares is dedicated to urban gross usage including deserted lands, military lands and stone bumps.

At the latest census in 1385, the population of Bandar Abbas was announced as 379301. Throughout history the body structure of Bandar Abbas has been rising as a pendulum and today this rise has led to the restriction of the central structure (Bazaar), due to its confrontation with two body development barriers in the east and west.

Being settled along the Hormuz Strait and the Persian Gulf coast, the city is given  a very close relationship with sea. A significant attention is paid to Bandar Abbas due to its marine transportation role, strategic situation and most importantly being the source of goods transportation.

Considering its innumerable capacities and investment history, Bandar Abbas paved way for emigration and trade which resulted in growing emigration to the city in the past decades.
